Jett and I sprang off the bed as if we’d been zapped. Nox had already been tucking himself back inside his jeans. He whipped around as a horde of at least ten guys charged into the living room. They were all wearing ski masks printed to look like skeleton heads.

The intruders skidded to a halt at the sight of us, freezing up momentarily as they took in Jett and me in our naked, paint-drenched glory. It wasn’t how I’d have wanted to make a first impression, but the shock our appearance provoked worked in our favor.

“What the fuck?” one of the intruders said, and in their momentary hesitation, Nox was already hurtling into the fray.

The leader of the Skullbreakers didn’t have the same problem with only being able to target one or two people at a time like Kai’s and Ruin’s powers. The bursts of supernatural energy that flowed out from his body with each strike did their damage regardless of how many opponents he went on to pummel next.

He blasted through the onslaught with his fists, knees, and feet flying in one direction and another, even ramming his head toward a guy a few feet away who promptly crashed into the wall as if he’d been hit by a battering ram. The crackling sound of each strike electrified the air.

The Skeleton Corps men—because who else would be in that skeletal get-up?—careened this way and that, bruises and bloody noses appearing as if out of thin air. But there were too many of them for Nox to totally subdue more than a few of them. As more figures barged into the living room, the attackers swarmed in around him, only a couple of them knocked to the floor in a daze.

Jett leapt for his gun, which was lost somewhere in the tangle of his discarded jeans. Too panicked at the sight of all those skeleton faces converging on Nox to care that I was butt naked, I dashed into the room and reached the frantic hum reverberating through me toward the nearest sources of liquid.

Water gushed from the kitchen faucet and whipped through the doorway to smack this guy and that in the face. I couldn’t hit them hard enough to knock them out, but from the grunts and pawing at their eyes, I’d hurt them, maybe even messed up their vision. I sent another flood gushing over the wooden floors, making them slip and stumble on the suddenly wet surface. It splashed against my legs, licking off streaks of paint to unfurl through the currents.

Jett charged out beside me, still just as naked but ferally terrifying with his purple hair spiking every which way, his eyes blazing with anger, and his body mottled with vibrant streaks and swirls that now passed for war paint. I sure as hell wouldn’t have wanted to face off with him, no matter how well-clothed I was. He pointed his gun and picked off three of the attackers in quick succession, aiming at those closest to him and farthest from Nox.
